Flotation

As a percentage of overall cost, flotation is a surprising culprit. Since more expensive and denser foam is needed for deeper vehicle operations, flotation blocks can work against a system physically and financially. Neutral buoyancy is rarely needed and actually detrimental for trenching work. When operating at shallower depths with high current as described above, less dense (and less expensive) low-profile flotation can be used. In the future, if a project calls for deeper operations, appropriate flotation can be sourced to equip the vehicle rather than having expensive flotation in storage and taking up valuable space on a system.
